“ENTWINED TOGETHER”

.

On 23rd. November ’07, the Annual Charity Quiz (for Myeloma Cancer) held privately in the Parish Centre in Narborough, was attended by 53 friends and fellow dancers of the late and sadly missed Margaret and Brian Crosbie. That night saw the first performance of a specially devised Scottish Country Dance entitled “Entwined Together”

You can read all about the Quiz in the December edition of the Leicester Branch Newsletter, soon to be on the Branch Website. However, by popular request, here is:

 The Story of the Dance.

The idea came about at Margaret’s funeral when a few of us happened to be chatting with Eleanor. I think it was actually Rona who voiced what all of us had been thinking – a Dance for Margaret; some of us to devise the words, Eleanor to compose the music, and we all said,

“Colin to set up and frame!”

At the next Quiz we would have a presentation to Margaret’s husband Brian.

And so it came to pass, but sadly, by now we were making a dance for both Margaret and Brian, - a Medley, with Doris devising the Strathspey and Pam the Reel. The Presentation at the next Quiz would be to their eldest daughter Alison.

The 2 elements of the Dance came together for the first time in the Grand Hotel in Leicester. This both puzzled and amused the waitress who looked on as 2 elderly ladies who had been quietly drinking coffee, suddenly stood up and performed some strange ritual, consisting of much hand waving and apparent acknowledgement of imaginary people!

Val came up with the title – the long suffering Dem. class tweaked the reel about and finally we had lift off with Eleanor’s wonderful music!

Forty bars of strathspey are neatly sandwiched ‘twixt 2 lots of forty bars of reel. Whilst both reels have the same figures they have different melodies. The dance therefore has 3 specially composed tunes appropriately named for Brian and Margaret. For the musical ones amongst us, even the keys in which the tunes are played are of special significance.  We are so grateful to Eleanor for the considerable amount of time she must have devoted to this.

The dance is not difficult and many of you have suggested that we should dance it socially very soon.

Also, in the not too distant future, we hope to have a live recorded C.D. and Colin’s handsome presentation of the words will be joined by an equally handsome presentation of the music for the dance “Entwined Together”
